The Stratospheric Terahertz Observatory (STO) is a NASA funded Long Duration Balloon (LDB) experiment designed to study the lifecycle of the Interstellar Medium (ISM). The project will survey large dense molecular clouds in the southern sky of the Milky Way in C⁺

(1.9 THz), the most important cooling line in the ISM, and N⁺ (1.46 THz), a tracer of young stars.

This blog will follow the 2011-2012 Antarctic campaign beginning on Nov. 7th, 2011 when it's author Jenna Kloosterman departs for New Zealand and continue until her return to New Zealand after STO is launched from an airfield near McMurdo Station in Antarctica.  This blog is intended for a public audience.  Questions and comments are encouraged!
